Thanks to funding from Talbot Family Network for the Healthy Habits Grant, ChesMRC held its quarterly Family Health Night in February focusing on Healthy Hearts.
The Healthy Heart event took place on February 13th, with the participation of the renowned cardiologist Dr. Juan Cordero. He shared valuable insights with all the students of the afterschool program about the importance of maintaining a healthy heart and the impact smoking has on heart health. Dr. Cordero also provided helpful tips on healthy eating and emphasized how exercise plays a fundamental role in keeping the body healthy.
Dr. Cordero spoke with children and their parents about what is good for your heart and how to keep it healthy with what you put in your body. Through his talk, he stressed the importance of making conscious and healthy choices to protect our hearts in the long term. It was an educational and enriching experience for everyone present.
The Healthy Hearts event was a part of ChesMRC Healthy Habits program which meets 4 days a week through our afterschool program and teaches children from grades 1 – 5 about nutrition, exercise, and how to develop healthy eating habits. During each class, the students either cook a healthy meal or learn a new exercise to incorporate into their daily lives. The students are also given recipes to take home to share with their families.
The quarterly events feature speakers and presentations from professionals to help educate families on healthy lifestyles. Each event provides a healthy cooked meal for families and fun activities for all.
