ChesMRC is partnering with Mid-Shore Pro Bono to initiate a new program “Contingency Planning for Maryland Families Facing Immigration Enforcement”. The need for this program has come about from the fear and panic generated by the media, Facebook and foreign embassies in the immigrant community.
Since January, ChesMRC has faced multiple challenges and had a surge in demand of services to confront the issues the rural immigrant population on the Mid-Shore is facing in confronting the possibility of deportation.
Our main goal since January has been to greatly reduce the panic, fear and anxiety that many children and families are feeling in our community. Unfortunately, what we are finding is with the increased fear and anxiety, many of our Clients have been falling victim to fraud and extortion. Maryland laws are different and unique when it comes to planning for children in the event of family separation – documents that are effective in other states and other countries might not be useful in Maryland, particularly for those trying to designate caregivers for their children in school and health care matters.
The new contingency planning for families initiative is designed to offer reliable, accurate and trustworthy information to the area’s immigrant community at no cost.
