Caroline Better Together, in partnership with Chesapeake College, led a Certified Community Interpreter Training Program to provide hands-on training and practical skills for certification in interpreting. Three ChesMRC employees attended the training and received the certification at no cost, thanks to course fees and materials for the program having been covered through APHSA and No Kid Hungry initiatives.
The course, with an aggressive schedule condensed to 6 days for 44 hours of training, focused on topics such as interpreter ethics, professional conduct, specialized terminology, interpreting techniques, sight translation, intervention strategies, and cultural mediation.
The program was designed to increase professional skills for bilingual service providers who work with families and individuals in need of language services in Caroline County. The purpose of this course is to better equip bilingual individuals with the skills, knowledge, and ethical principles needed to facilitate communication between services providers and individuals.
This new cohort of individuals, now trained and certified to facilitate communication among speakers of different languages, is ready to serve the community in a variety of settings, such as healthcare, social services, education, etc.
