What is cultural competence?

“Deep respect for cultural differences,
Eager to learn, and
Willing to accept that….
there are many ways of viewing the world.”

-Okokon O. Udo, Ph.D.
Northwestern University

Cultural diversity is considered an asset for vibrant communities. Urban experts have a high regard for communities where diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups coexist in harmony and embrace their differences.

In today’s globalized world, being able to appreciate and embrace cultural diversity is an essential and desirable skill.  To become culturally competent, we consciously engage in a continuous and dynamic three-step process:

  1.  becoming aware of our own and other people’s cultural identity,
  2.  being willing to learn and increase our knowledge about other cultures,
  3. mindfully creating a sense of respect and harmony by effectively interacting with people from different backgrounds.

Talbot County is quickly adapting to recent demographic changes through a Language and Cultural Competence initiative.  This is promoting a better understanding about cultural differences, a more intimate knowledge of the immigrant community, and a pathway to thrive together in every aspect of community life.
